The importance of regular piano tuning and maintenance

Updated: May 4

Regular piano tuning is really important because it:

   •   Keeps the piano sounding beautiful.

   •   Protects the instrument’s structure — when the tension across the strings stays balanced, it reduces strain on the frame, soundboard, and pinblock.

   •   Prevents bigger problems — letting a piano go too long out of tune can lead to strings slipping more, pins loosening, and expensive repairs down the line.

   •   Maintains proper pitch — if a piano drops too far from standard pitch (A440), it takes more work (and sometimes multiple tunings) to bring it back safely.

   •   Helps the piano adapt to seasonal changes — humidity and temperature shifts constantly stretch and relax the strings; regular tuning keeps everything stable.

   •   Supports developing musical ears — for students especially, playing on an out-of-tune piano can mess with ear training and make progress harder.

Basically, tuning isn’t just about perfection — it’s about protecting the piano’s health over time.
